The Babushkah(tm) was created by the mother and daughter team Phyllis and Nicole Stagg, of STS Designs, LLC, a New York based company.
Nicole wanted a bandana made from Polar Fleece to keep her warm during the cold weather. Surprisingly, after an exhaustive market search, nothing turned up. So her mother cut a triangle with ties out of a Fleece scarf to create a bandana shape, and made it reversible with denim on the other side. It was the perfect answer!
Suddenly everyone they knew wanted them, and in 2001 their business was established. They launched with 15-20 fabrics, each backed with Polar Fleece. Soon after they introduced a lighter version, suitable for warm weather and indoor wear.
Requests started coming in for a larger Babushkah™ that could provide full head coverage, so the line was again expanded to include a large, oversized headscarf.
Suddenly the Babushkah™ became popular for many purposes beyond what STS Designs originally envisioned. Women dealing with hair loss due to chemotherapy and/or alopecia wanted them, as did women looking for a modern way to cover their heads for religious purposes. Men started wearing them jogging, hiking, biking and skiing. Kids and teens wanted them to keep up with the fashions and stay warm at the same time. They became a non-bulky alternative to a scarf. Babushkahs™ even started showing up on dogs.
During the past two years, the Babushkah™ and STS Designs have been recognized by many pre-eminent non-profit organizations around the country, including CancerCare, Planet Cancer, The National Alopecia Areata Foundation, Dana Farber Cancer Center, The Libby Ross Foundation, The Maurer Foundation, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. They're also sold in 25+ fashion boutiques around the country.
Channel WB11 in New York recently presented a Babushkah™ fashion show on their Weekday Morning News Show to demonstrate the different ways it can be worn and its broad appeal to people of all ages. The Boston Herald has said that the Babushkah™ is "definitely a where'd-you-get-that item." STS Designs continues to evolve the Babushkah™, with new styles and uses. There is a wide selection of contemporary fabrics to choose from, including suede, velvet, British plaid, and much more. New fabrics and patterns are added regularly to keep the line fresh and up-to-date.
